Yevgeniya "Eugena" Pechenaya is a former USSR immigrant with a passion for art and medieval recreation. She moved to Brooklyn, NY with her family in the 1990s from Moscow, Russia.
Eugena is a historical reenactor and a member of the Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA), where she is known as Lada Monguligin. She creates pieces based on medieval and Renaissance arts from across the world. She also teaches on a variety of historical calligraphy and illumination topics, as part of her SCA participation.
She has a Bachelors in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
I work primarily with gouache paints either hand ground or from a tube for illumination and inks for calligraphy. I try to work as closely as possible, to the same mediums as the scribes of the Middle Ages did, while using safe modern alternatives
I draw my inspiration from the arts of the medieval world, from medieval manuscripts of Europe to hanging scrolls of Japan. I use inks, gouache paints on variety of papers to create my pieces.
By re-interpreting the concepts from medieval art I want viewers to connect viewers to a time past through a modern point of view.
